What JY is

What is JY?: A Windows study app that puts a PDF reader, notebooks and AI questions in one place. Keep an exam paper or textbook PDF open, ask right there, and note down what you learn.
What isn't it?: It does not guarantee correct answers: the AI can be wrong, so every answer carries its source. It is not a cloud service either: your PDFs and notes are never uploaded to a JY server. For now it is Windows only.
What do I need?: A Windows PC and a ChatGPT account. Questions to the AI use your own ChatGPT plan's usage.
Which AI answers?: OpenAI models, through your own ChatGPT account. You can pick the model and reasoning level in "Change the AI"; once you pick one, JY never quietly switches to another AI.

Does JY search the web?: There is nothing to switch on. Like a normal AI app, the AI searches on its own when it needs recent information, and an answer that used the web gets small source links under it.
Were the published scores measured with web search on?: Yes, with web search on auto, the way JY is normally used. We also checked the search log, and one line under the results says whether the AI looked up answers or explanations. Each result also says how the exam was asked (one request per subject, or one question at a time).

Where are my PDFs and notes stored?: Only on the PC where you use JY. JY's operator never receives your PDFs, notes or conversations.
What is sent when I ask?: Your question and the text, page images and parts of the PDF needed to answer it go to OpenAI through your own ChatGPT account.
Does JY change my original PDF?: No. Highlights, pen marks and memos are kept in JY's records. If you need a file with your marks in it, make a copy with "Save PDF with marks".

Do scanned PDFs work?: Yes. The AI reads the page image itself. If the text is faint or full of symbols and formulas, draw a box around that part with the "Ask" tool for a more accurate answer.
Can it read handwriting?: Clear handwriting, yes. Hurried or very small writing can be misread, so box the part you mean and check the result.
What about books with hundreds of pages?: They work. You can open and ask about long PDFs, and JY finds the pages a question needs. Naming the page or chapter makes it faster and more accurate.
Password-protected PDFs?: Not yet. Please add a copy without the password.

Where can I get it?: JY is shared directly by the person who makes it, with people they know. There is no other place to get it.
How do I move to a new PC?: Make a backup file in Settings › "Backup" and restore it in JY on the new PC. Copy the PDFs separately.
